Penis Plugs 101: All You Need to Know

The human body has a lot of places that are a source of sexual pleasure if stimulated properly. Sometimes, you can find these erogenous zones in places you wouldn’t even expect.

Numerous as these pleasure points are, there are at least just as many toys out there that are designed specifically to stimulate them, and some of them can be pretty strange, indeed.

Take for example, the penis plug. These toys are designed to go into a man’s urethra, which is probably not the first thing you’d think of when you hear “pleasure”.

Using them, in fact, may feel more like a medical procedure than anything else. But try to reserve judgement after you’ve learned more about them. We might just pique your curiosity.

What is a Penis Plug?

A penis plug is a type of sex toy that is designed to be inserted into a penis through the urethra. If you are familiar with catheters, then they more or less work the same way, except penis plugs are shorter, at least not long enough to reach the bladder.

Although there are different designs of penis plugs, they all share the same basic shape. They are typically rod-shaped, around 1 to 4 inches long, and are around a quarter inch wide.

They are tapered on one end to make them easier to insert and will have a ring on one end opposite the insertable part. This ring not only makes it easy to remove the plug after use, but also prevents it from going too far into the urethra and getting lost.

Most penis plugs are hollow, so you can both urinate and ejaculate safely while you are wearing them.

Penis plugs can have a variety of designs, including bumps, vibrators, beads, and softer parts that can improve the experience.

Why Use a Penis Plug?

For some people, especially if it’s their first time hearing about them, a penis plug might not be an appealing sex toy to try out. But you’d be surprised with what benefits you can get out of them.

For one thing, penis plugs are designed to make the penis more sensitive, hence leading to stronger orgasms. This is because the penis itself is full of nerve endings, and even more so within the urethra’s walls, and penis plugs are designed to stimulate them.

This also gives penis plugs the ability to improve your erections my making you more aroused. Not only will your penis be harder, but they can look bigger as well, at least temporarily.

Longer penis plugs, also called urethral sounds, can be long enough stimulate the prostate gland, too. They can basically offer you a different route to a prostate orgasm if you’re not too keen on stimulating it through your back end.

How to Use a Penis Plug

Now that you’re at least familiar with what penis plugs are and why anyone would use them, you’re probably eager to try them out.

But let’s put the breaks on that for a bit. Inserting penis plugs is not that easy. In fact, if you do it wrong, it can lead to some nasty injuries on your member, and who would want that, right?

We got your back though. Here is a step by step guide on how to wear a penis plug.

Keep Things Flaccid

When it comes to wearing a penis plug, it’s best to keep things relaxed, and we don’t just mean your mental state. We mean, it’s easier to wear a penis plug on a flaccid dick.

If your penis is erect, the urethral walls will push together, which means there’s less room for the plug to move around in. This makes it more uncomfortable, too.

Of course, some people who are used to wearing penis plugs can insert them erect, but for beginners, it’s best to not force it.

Lubricate

Another way you can minimize the discomfort of inserting a penis plug is by using ample amounts of lubrication.

Your penis actually produces its own lubrication when you’re aroused in the form of pre-ejaculate, or commonly known as pre-cum.

But this pre-ejaculate is nowhere near enough to help out in inserting a penis pump. On top of that, you need to be very aroused for your penis to start producing it, which means you will have to be erect.

Apply the lube on the opening to your urethra, as well as on the tip of your penis plug before insertion.

Insert

Once you’ve applied enough lube, you can start inserting your penis plug. Do remember that this is a delicate procedure, and if you rush it, you might just hurt yourself.

Hold your penis upright with your non-dominant hand. Hold the urethral opening open with your thumb and index finger. With your dominant hand, guide and insert the plug slowly.

Try to stay as relaxed as possible. The muscles in your urethra will naturally try to push the penis plug out as a defense mechanism.

The plug is a foreign object, after all, and this reflex is meant to keep the passage clear of any debris and blockages. You can fight the urge, however, by keeping yourself as relaxed as possible.

We recommend breathing through your nose and exhaling slowly out of your mouth. Push the plug slowly as you breathe out.

If you feel any discomfort during insertion, even after you’ve used enough lube, don’t force it any further. Take the plug out and try again after you’ve recovered.

Once the plug is inserted, it’s safe to have an erection, so you can start stimulating your penis. Once you’re fully erect, see if you’re comfortable enough to orgasm.

Aftercare

Once you’ve had your fill, it’s time to take the plug out. Just like pulling it out, it’s best not to do it too quickly to avoid injury.

Wait until your penis is nice and flaccid before you pull the plug out. If it’s taking a bit of effort, you can apply some lube again.

Once the plug is out, check for any cuts or bruising on your penis. Don’t reuse your plug again until you’ve washed it.

Safety Tips

The urethra is a very sensitive area in your body, and it is prone to injury if you’re not careful. Here are a few things you can keep in mind to minimize any problems you might face.

  • Only use penis plugs specifically designed for the task. Do not insert any random toy into your urethra.
  • Keep your toys clean and sterilized. The urethral walls are considered a mode of entry for microbes and other nasties. Using an unclean toy is very unhygienic and can lead to infection.
  • If your penis plug is not hollow, pull it out, carefully, of course, right before ejaculation. This is to prevent pressure and fluid buildup from happening inside your penis, which can lead to injury.
  • For first-timers, it’s best to use simpler penis plug designs. Once you’re used to them, you can start exploring other penis plug types.
